Adults with chronic conditions in Canada, Germany and the US were more likely to experience longer waits to see a doctor than chronically ill adults in other countries, this study found. Researchers compare access and health costs in eight countries -- Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the UK and the US. Relative to the other countries, US adults with chronic conditions were more likely to have high out-of-pocket medical costs, exceeding $1,000. In the UK, patients were more likely to have lower out-of-pocket costs, less than $500, relative to other countries. (The Commonwealth Fund, 19 Nov 2008, 36 pages)
